Ada Lovelace Day – celebrating women in STEM

11 Oct 2022

GAMBICA is celebrating Ada Lovelace Day today (11 Oct) recognising the achievements of women in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM).

The trade association has launched the first in a series of videos displaying the career journeys of GAMBICA Young Council members to commemorate the day. The first film focuses on Emma Sanderson.

Emma, from Scientific Laboratory Supplies, explains how she started her career and what she enjoys about it. The video series will hopefully encourage other young people to get into STEM. View Emma’s video here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vRZkneNOR4M

GAMBICA has also teamed up with board member, Debora Marchese, COO at GC biotech UK Ltd, who has shared her views on why it’s so important for women to be represented in STEM.

Debora said: “With the current underrepresentation of women – and especially BAME women – in STEM fields, it becomes particularly important to celebrate all that has been achieved so far, in the hope to inspire more young girls to follow their dreams and male-dominated companies to intentionally build a more inclusive work environment.

“For employers, more women in STEM translates to different view points, different ideas, and a diverse workforce – a major drive for innovation.”

She added: “We owe it to the younger generation to give them role models and educators that look like them, so that they feel motivated to follow their own career path, confident that they can do anything they set their mind to.”

Ada Lovelace Day aims to increase the profile of women in STEM, creating new role models to encourage more girls into STEM careers and support women already working in STEM.

Ada Lovelace was an English mathematician known for her work on Charles Babbage's proposed mechanical general-purpose computer, the Analytical Engine. She is often regarded as the first computer programmer.
