National Careers Week 2025

To celebrate National Careers Week and to showcase the wide variety of jobs on offer in the GAMBICA industries, we’re profiling member Scientific Laboratory Supplies.

SLS is the UK’s largest independent supplier of laboratory equipment, chemicals and consumables. They employ over 150 people in different departments such as customer services, sales, logistics and compliance.

Lucy Moore, Sustainability Manager, said: “I love my job because I get to be analytical, strategic and creative but also make a real difference. I have to think outside the box but still keep it real with people.

Sometimes, I feel a little like everyone’s Jiminy Cricket – offering honest guidance to help others navigate the often tricky paths of environmental and ethical decisions, even when it’s not always the easiest thing to hear!

The to-do lists are never-ending, and it’s a constant journey to be better than yesterday, but that’s what keeps it exciting. This topic is a challenge – one of the biggest we face - but that’s exactly why I love it.”

Matthew Abbott, Product Manager, said: “Each day on the job is different; it’s a mix of technical support, product marketing and data management which requires me to be knowledgeable, detail orientated, organised and collaborative.

My role allows me to draw on my scientific background to help showcase products in the best possible way whilst providing expertise and input into a fast-paced and evolving market.”

Emma Sanderson, Customer Services Team Manager, said: “Every day is different in my role! I enjoy the variety of tasks - from finding tailored solutions for our customers, to handling large project orders, and developing internal processes.

I also love the leadership side of my role, I like finding new ways to inspire my teams and guide them to success. Helping people develop and grow in their careers is incredibly rewarding. Plus, being a chatterbox... I get to talk to and learn from so many different people which keeps things exciting!”

Lee Jenkins, General Manager - Supply Chain, said: “Over my 24-year procurement career at SLS, I’ve loved building strong relationships and creating value through strategic supplier management, contract negotiation, and product range development.

The best part of my role has always been meeting people—whether suppliers, colleagues, or stakeholders—and working together to make a real impact on the company’s success. SLS has given me incredible career growth opportunities and the chance to see many parts of the world, which has been an amazing experience.”

Katy Bridge, Head of Technical Specialist Sales, said: “Each day at SLS brins variety and new challenges. As Head of Specialist Sales, I regularly engage with suppliers to explore cutting-edge product and application innovations that benefit our customers. My team and I thrive on meaningful conversations, working closely with customers to understand their needs and provide effective solutions.

Nearly 10 years ago, I started my journey at SLS as a Life Science Specialist and have since grown into a leadership role. SLS has been incredibly supportive of my professional development, enabling me to gain leadership and coaching qualifications—even giving me the chance to wear a graduation cap again! The friendly team and continuous learning make SLS an amazing place to work.”
